There are many causes of bad breath...
These may include:
- poor dental hygiene
- diet (ie. garlic, onions, spices, skipping meals, low-carb diets)
- smoking
- alcohol
- caffeine
- periodontal (gum and bone) disease
- oral yeast infection
- cavities
- dry mouth
- infections after oral surgery
- medications (that cause dry mouth)
- pregnancy
- dentures
- health conditions (i.e. respiratory infections, diabetes, chronic acid reflux, chronic sinus infections, liver or kidney problems)

There are many treatment or prevention suggestions for bad breath...
These include:
1. REVIEW ORAL HYGIENE HABITS AND PRACTICE GOOD ORAL HYGIENE
- brushing teeth with toothpaste after meals
- brush tongue with toothbrush or tongue scraper
- floss daily or any other aids to reach between the teeth
- have teeth professionally scaled if needed
- replace toothbrush regularly (every 3-4 months or when frayed)
- rinse often
- use antibacterial mouthwashes
- brush denture thoroughly and remove at
bed time - brush dental appliances
3. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
- avoid dehydration
- avoid dry mouth
- chew sugar-free gum (xylitol is best)
- suck on sugar-free mints (xylitol is best)
4. MODIFY DIET
- avoid foods which cause bad breath
- caution with low-carbohydrate diets
- limit or avoid alcohol
- limit or avoid caffeine
- avoid missing meals
